The Miracle of Trout

I’m working on a story about mayflies for New Zealand Geographic magazine and the guy who is photographing it, George Novak, is one of the best macro shooters I’ve ever come across. George has previously shot a story about the life cycle of rainbow trout for the magazine and, with his permission, I’d like to share some of those images with you here. Truly a magnificent and rarely seen insight into the life of trout.

I’ll post some of the mayflies macro too, once we are done with the story.

A really high quality post Derek. Fabulous images and a true insight. I hope reactions from this are positive and the idiots leave it be. I hear you are back in the guides association (NZPFGA) that’s great to hear and my recommendation to all travelers to NZ- only use guides in the NZPFGA or you run the risk of coming a long way to get burned. Thanks for posting.

Thank you Craig, yes, there has been a bit of piggy-backing on my posts, especially on LinkedIn, a guy trying to market his “budget” fly fishing trips in NZ, using my content as the vehicle. I suggested that he changes his nickname from “… the fish” to “… the Leech,” as all he really seems to want to do is to attach himself to people’s wallets.

In the end you always get what you pay for, no free lunches in this Universe, and “budget fly fishing” is just that, not really worth doing.

New season only days away …

Derek that sounds like a great project. Would love to see some bug porn when you get it up. Mayflies are very sexy to those of us that are at the top of the dryfly game.

Yes Marcus, I’ll be posting it here. Also got a friend tying superbly realistic mayfly life-cycle so we’ll have both – real bugs and artificials. To my mayflies look like little ballerinas with fairy wings, sexy indeed.
